A Letter from Emilie D. Kosoff, Incoming Head of School

Dear LCDS Community,

“It is magic here every day.” This sentiment from a leader of the Parents’ Association resonated so deeply with me on my last visit to Lancaster Country Day School that it cemented my belief that this would be a wonderful place for the final chapter of my career. I understood exactly what a member of the Search Committee meant when she said she appreciated the little things the School did to make her child’s transition into the community a seamless one. I, too, felt the power of the broad smiles and warm welcome I experienced in every corner of the campus.

For thirteen formative years, I attended Harrisburg Academy, where I was taught, coached, and mentored by teachers who knew me, shaped my development, and demonstrated the power and value of an independent school community. During my visits to LCDS, I recognized the same investment of this faculty in their students and the School as a whole. I witnessed children in the Lower School happily engaged in study and play. In the Middle School, around the Harkness table in Social Studies, students were challenged to be critical and independent thinkers. Upper School students in American Studies were engaged in democratic discourse intentionally focused on relevant topics. At every level, students were in a learning environment focused on meaningful, challenging, rewarding, and joyous interactions in the classroom.

When I asked Middle and Upper School students for advice, they shared that the Head of School should get to know and engage with the students, face their issues in the moment, and compromise not dictate. Sage advice. Their counsel gave me insight into the many strengths of the School and I look forward to working with the entire community under a shared mission.

My husband, Sam, and I are so happy to be joining the LCDS community and grateful to have been a part of Lawrenceville since 1992. These were formative years that quite literally brought our family together: Sam and I met while working at Lawrenceville and we raised our children, Katherine and Jack, on campus. I am truly thankful to my colleagues, students and parents who were partners in the work we accomplished. Now, Sam and I are eager to begin the next chapter in our lives as part of Lancaster Country Day School.

This feels like coming home, and I am deeply honored to serve as your next Head of School to lead the LCDS community.

With immense gratitude,

Emilie D. Kosoff
