Holiday gift ideas in the school store
Posted December 1
The school store wants to help you with your holiday shopping. You’ll find LCDS shirts, sweatshirts, pajama bottoms and other wearable items available in both student and adult sizes.
In addition to clothing, there are other items that make great holiday or hostess gifts. The art department is selling large, student designed note cards featuring artwork created by Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools students. The cards are available in the school store for $20 (packet of 20 cards and envelopes). All proceeds benefit the LCDS art department.
With LCDS celebrating its Centennial this year, we are offering coasters, mouse pads, and paper note cubes featuring a Centennial theme design. If you are still needing another gift idea, gift certificates can be the solution. Students enjoy shopping on their own for school supplies and other items.
The school store is open 7:45 a.m. to 12:00 noon - Monday through Friday. Nan Killough, store manager, is available to help parents with gift buying ideas for their student. If you have any questions, or want gift suggestions, please contact Nan at (717) 392-2916 ext. 251 or email killoughn@e-lcds.org. -
The Excellence Fund
Posted December 1
The 2008-2009 Excellence Fund Campaign is underway! Thank you to those of you who have made your gift or pledge to this important program at LCDS. To date we’ve raised slightly more than $200,000 and are well on our way to reaching our $400,000 goal. Support of The Excellence Fund is vital to LCDS as tuition covers 85% of the actual cost of an LCDS education and gifts to The Excellence Fund help the school bridge this gap.
Your donations are used during the current year wherever the school needs them. Some examples of where the funds are used are: providing our faculty with the resources they need in classrooms; supplying educational programs with equipment and materials; purchasing and maintaining computers and technology in our classrooms; providing resources to the athletic and arts programs, etc.
If you haven’t made your gift yet, please know that we value your support and hope that you will consider supporting The Excellence Fund during the current academic year. Every gift matters and is appreciated. For a list of parents, teachers, alumni and parents of alumni serving as members of this year’s Excellence Fund Committee see page four of this publication.
If you have an questions about the Excellence Fund, please contact any of the people listed on page four or call Heather Davis ‘93, Director of Annual Giving at 392-2916, ext. 325.

Marvelous Mabel
Posted December 1
The preschool class spent most of the past month learning about cows, an animal commonly seen in Lancaster County. Over the course of several weeks, the children were quick to identify the different breeds of cows (black and white are Holstein, while the brown cows are Guernsey). One of the activities the class of three olds enjoyed was tasting a variety of dairy products and graphing their favorites.
Other insights and highlights included:
• learning that cows have four stomachs
• discovering that milk comes from a cow - not just a store
• milking a saw horse cow
• creating cow costumes for a harvest party
• having a milk truck visit the school
• feeding and brushing a two day old calf
• naming the calf Mabel -
Focus on Living
Posted December 1
“Focus on Living: Portraits of Americans with HIV and AIDS” is a nationally touring exhibit that will be showcased at Lancaster Country Day School during the week of December 15-19, in the Upper School Library.
Over 900,000 Americans are living with HIV (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). One quarter of these Americans are unaware of their infection. There are approximately 40,000 new HIV infections each year in the United States. Of these newly infected, half are under 25 years of age.
The nationally-touring photograph-text exhibit, “Focus On Living: Portraits of Americans with HIV and AIDS”, showcases sixteen Americans living with HIV and AIDS. This exhibit is open for the LCDS community to view throughout the week from 8:10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily.
The touring “Focus on Living” exhibit offers a powerful HIV/AIDS education resource for communities. “Focus on Living” is the work of acclaimed photographer/writer, Roslyn Banish, author of four books exploring human issues by combining photographs and text. The exhibit is based on the book, “Focus on Living”, (U. Mass Press) with introduction by Paul A. Volberding, M.D., Vice-Chair, Department of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco.
“Focus on Living” travels nationwide to schools, universities, health and social welfare agencies, medical schools, public libraries, community centers, museums, conferences, hospitals, workplaces, and places of worship.
