Lower School

When you walk into our Lower School (preschool and kindergarten through grade five), you can feel the positive energy. It's the energy of children eagerly launching missions of discovery… the energy of classrooms buzzing with the sounds of enthusiastic education… and the energy that springs from the laughter of youngsters who are not only celebrated as individuals but who are also taught to appreciate and respect the individuality of others. Students here at LCDS learn that they are each special in their own way as the concept of community is firmly planted.

To make the most of the early childhood years, our Lower School program has well-defined goals: to provide a solid foundation in academic skills; to introduce children to the arts; to promote health and wellness; to develop social and emotional skills; and to give children opportunities to build critical and creative thinking skills.

We keep curiosity piqued with active involvement and hands-on learning; and while our instruction focuses on basic concepts, we challenge children’s thinking through problem solving and practical application of basic skills. Using some of the best children’s literature available, we instill a love of reading. And our field trips, special assemblies and knowledgeable guests bring classroom learning to life. In addition, children meet daily with specialists who provide instruction in foreign language, art, music, technology, or physical education.

Of course, it’s not all work; we believe in recess, too… and the developmental importance of imaginative play.

We believe that, by allowing young people to experience success through applying sustained effort to manageable tasks, we help them develop a motivation and joy for learning that last far beyond their school years.
