School projects

The LCDS community of students, parents, faculty, staff, and friends supports several events and projects each year. These events foster awareness about social concerns, facilitate student contributions and involve parents.

Reaching Out

After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the entire school joined together to raise funds to help the refugees from this disaster. The school raised a substantial sum of money and donated items to help these people. As a result of the tsunami that devastated portions of Asia, India and eastern Africa on December 26,2004, the entire school joined together to raise funds to help victims of this disaster. A significant portion of the fund will be going directly to the residents of a town in Sri Lanka.

Martin Luther King Day

On Martin Luther King Day, students and parents join the local Martin Luther King, Jr. "Day of Service" to help others in Lancaster and Berks counties. These projects are coordinated by parent volunteers and staff. Students are also encouraged to find their own projects to work on, making their day off, a "Day of Service" to others.

Empty Bowls

In the Spring of 2003 and again in 2004, the Art Department sponsored Empty Bowls Night at our school. Prior to each event, the entire community was encouraged to make ceramic bowls with the assistance of the Art Department faculty. All food was donated by the Lancaster community. Participants in each event were offered a dinner of soup, bread and fresh water and took home a handmade bowl. One hundred percent of the money raised from Empty Bowls is donated to a charitable effort to fight hunger.

Helping In Our Local Community

Last year, Upper School Student Council refurbished a local 'pocket' park behind a City of Lancaster elementary school. In addition, funds raised by the Council and from the school's annual Chili Cook Off resulted in the purchase of a security camera for the site. A local business incorporated the camera into its computerized security system in order to help increase the safety of the newly refurbished park.
