When you enter our Lower School, you are certain to break into a smile. It's a place where children excitedly launch missions of discovery. Classrooms are alive with the sounds of learning. Children exude enthusiasm. Laughter springs from youngsters who are not only celebrated as individuals but are taught to appreciate and respect the individuality of others. Clearly, the Lower School is designed to build the foundations necessary for future success and happiness. Children learn that they are each special in their own way.
The Lower School is dedicated to providing a solid foundation in academic skills while helping children build self-esteem as their efforts produce success in the challenges that are placed before them. Small classes allow teachers to provide the personal attention necessary to nurture each child.
Active involvement and hands-on learning stimulate curiosity while providing many opportunities for children to stretch their thinking. Mathematics instruction focuses on the basic concepts and challenges children's thinking through problem solving and through practical application of basic skills. Some of the best in children's literature is used to develop an enthusiastic love of reading. Field trips, special assemblies and knowledgeable guests, invited into the classrooms to share their expertise, are all excellent vehicles to bring classroom learning to life. Themes and interdisciplinary studies are created to connect concepts and to make learning meaningful.
An encouraging environment invites the growth of the whole child. Children meet daily with specialists who provide instruction in foreign language, art, music, technology or library sciences. Physical education is offered three or four times a week to promote physical fitness, teamwork, and positive outlets for the students' boundless energy.
Our Lower School is based on the belief that experiencing success for sustained effort applied to a manageable task early in life establishes patterns of positive motivation and joy in learning that lasts far beyond graduation from high school.
