LCDS is proud of its diverse student population and of its international students, who comprise approximately 17% of the student body. The Country Day Community prides itself on an open-minded feel and a deep respect for people of varied backgrounds. The nature of a Preschool through 12 Grade Community and our investment in co-curricular activities that invite broad exposure to folks from every part of our school creates connections and understanding in sync with the college and career realities of the 21st Century.
Research nationally and locally affirm that independent school graduates are more likely than their peers at other types of schools (public, parochial, etc.) to socialize actively with people of different backgrounds in college. For those who take the opportunity to visit Country Day and experience the school's warm and friendly feel themselves, this will come as no surprise. Our culture and curriculum have an outward focus, and celebrate human difference.
Despite Country Day's rigor, most students who come from international schools do not experience any academic adjustment problems. Those who are fluent in their native tongue and are not accustomed to taking all their courses in English are waived the requirement of studying a third foreign language.
New international students are invited to a special orientation program, beginning before the other new students arrive in August, to get to know the school and each other and to recover from jet lag. The International Club offers any Country Day student the opportunity to share his or her culture through informal socializing, dances and ethnic meals.
